THE LOST FORMS ARCHIVE · 10 · The First Pattern
An original fictional field note from the Veilbound Realms Imaginarium. Alternate forms and notebook events belong to the story.
I chose this side.
The side with a table, a lamp and a collection of printed skeletons. The side where a drawing was a drawing and imagination could borrow from what I had seen.
I wrote it inside the door.
The notebook stayed still.
For the first time, I understood what the objects had given me. Not proof of another world. A way to notice how quickly I filled a gap, chose a role, invented a history.
The bones were real subjects. The alternative forms were mine to imagine. Keeping those things distinct hadn't made the story smaller. It had given me something solid to push against.
I turned to the beginning and drew the Tyrannosaurus again.
One shadow this time.
Beside it, I drew the winged version on a separate sheet. No pretending. No discovery announcement. Just a possibility I wanted to see.
Then I noticed the handwriting.
Every small note in the notebook used the same odd shape for the letter g. The same one I had used in an old sketchbook. I found the sketchbook and compared them.
Mine.
The first mystery closed there: the clues had come from my own marks, ideas and assumptions. I had been following a trail through what I made.
Whether the strange familiarity meant anything beyond that remained a question. The Archive called it an echo. It didn't claim an answer.
I closed both books.
When I came back, a loose sheet lay between them. A drawing of my table, viewed from the other side of the door.
The skeletons were there. So was the notebook.
The chair was occupied.
I couldn't see the face.
I could see what it was drawing.
It wasn't a dinosaur.
BACK TO THE EVIDENCE
The real starting point
This finale resolves the fictional puzzle. The real specimens come from different groups and periods; they are not a single evolutionary sequence. Alternate realities and recognition across them are the story premise, not fossil evidence.
